Until recently, I have been using standard Halfords multi grade diesel engine oil in our 20 year old Thorneycroft engine [based on 2.52litre BL Sherpa/taxi engine].

However, I have just read through the original manual which specifies monograde oil of 20W viscosity.

Recent posts /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif have mulled over the mineral/synthetic/named brands issues, but what about modern multigrades vs monograde??

Your thoughts?

I had a T90 1.5 and as I was unsure what to use I asked Thorneycroft. One of their technical people reckoned that the best thing to use was Wilkinson's "own brand" 20/50. This suited me as it was also exceedingly cheap! He also said definitely not to use any of the high tech oils meant for modern engines.

Eventually contacted oil lubricants specialist for their opinion, re-printed below:

Due to the nature of the engine design and the service, we would recommend the use of a monograde. The product we recommend for narrowboats is normally Supreme 30; however, if this engine needs an SAE 20w/20, then we would recommend our Supreme 20.

The use of multigrades is not advised due to possible bore glazing in this type of service and the lack of full flow filtration fitted to older engines.

We trust this answers your question.
