Do I have to use the fully synthetic drive oil for my 290 DPA legs with reverse latches? I have been told that it is ok to use engine oil, but wondered if anyone else has heard of this.

One of my VP workshop manuals says you can only use ordinary engine oil in the very early stuff 270/280 etc,my other ancient workshop manual says ep90 should be used in the 290.

Hi,
290dpa also.
fwiw ....
Re- filled again with semi syn 'non' volvo last year after installing a new clutch cone on s/b drive due to non engagement problems at tickover. Problem bit better but still difficult.
Serviced in March and fitted 'spec' Volvo oil and now works fine.
Was told that non spec oil can cause problems and also that the oil level is very important.
Really hate to admit it but I would fit the spec 'Volvo' oil.
Much dearer but seems to work.

I have just answered this very question for an MBM reader.

DP-A Drives require Gear Oil to API GL-5 and SAE 90. Volvo do not specify that your drives requires synthetic oil.

DP-A1 uses he same oil as DP-A, but DP-A2 does require Synthetic oil

Do you know what exact version of DP-A drive you have???

Hi
In the VP Workshop manual technical data for the Aquamatic 280 and 290 the oil quality listed is 'Engine Oil service SE' and under viscosity is 'Multigrade SAE 10W-30 or 10W40' It lists the same spec oil for the Aquamatic Duoprop outdrive, although the oil quantity is 2.7L for this leg

The oil quantity in the 280/290 Aquamatic is approx. 2.6 L and the capacity between the min and max on the dipstick is 0.15L, as already mentioned do not overfill.

Interesting, I know you know your VP stuff, so I am confused.

VP gave me a list of drives and oil requirements and that states different to what you are saying.

All AQ280SP drives use engine oil
All AQ280DP drives use Gear oil API GL5 SAE 90
All AQ290SP drives use engine oil
All AQ290DP drives use Gear oil API GL5 SAE 90
Then it goes into the SP and DP designated drives and there is a real mixture here including a couple where either engine oil or fully syth oil can be used /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The DP-A info provided above was from that list

There are NO DP drives on the list where engine oil is recommended.

There is a small footnote on this list that states: If the drive was manufactured before 1986 for a 30 or 40 engine and has previously been operated with engine oil in the drive, engine oil should be used in future.

It is not clear what specific drives the above quote refers to.

I can understand your confusion, all I did was go to my 280/290 Aquamatic workshop manual and quote their details, however if I had seen your list I can go along with that, in fact I used API GL SAE 90 in my 280 SP outdrives, I even used that the first year in my 290 DPE's by mistake, the supplier thought I still had 280's so just gave me the usual oil, I changed it the following year to fully synthetic but to date have not had any problems and they are on 1070+ hours.
So getting back to the original post I would probably go with API GL 5 SAE 90.
Does that help the confusion?
