I've just drained the gearbox oil on the ZF MPM 220 gear boxes and replaced it with yanmar SAE30 gear oil.
Is that the right stuff? I'm now slightly concerned it should have been 30w engine oil rather than gear oil.
The plate on the side simply specifies SAE 30 and 0.8 US gallons capacity.

Our Twin disc gearboxes use plain W 30 engine oil .
The multi grade stuff like 10W 40 that you may use for the actual engines is said to foam hence a single grade for the G box
There’s clutch plates in the marine g boxes which cause friction deliberately and a bit more heat generation .
So single W engine oil is used normally 30 W

Your cars clutch is a dry plate outside the lub system , so the box full of gogs uses gear box oil approx 75w90 to cope .

However SAE 30 and W 30 are the same for engines .just different labels.

Not sure where the “ gearbox “ label comes in sound s like the same as engine oil .?

Fantastic, thanks all.

Certainly was a very expensive way of buying it, but trying to grab some on a Sunday ruled out the usual local places to pick something up cheap.
Wickes had as SAE30 lawnmower oil for a 1/3 of the price, but I was sufficiently paranoid about my boxes to fork out for the yanmar stuff!
