Anybody got a source of single grade 30 oil for the gear box? What are you using for the engine?

you could try a farmers suppliers, usually very good for all types of machinery oil.

Are you sure that you need to use straight 30 grade oil? There is this rumour about old engines not liking new-style oils but I've run my 48 year-old sports car on Castrol 15/50 and more recently 15/40 for 23 years now and everything's fine. Your query was about a gearbox - I use the same oil in the gearbox. I would have thought that any gearbox, either car or boat, would have a hard time distinguishing between 30 and 15/40 or 15/50 oils.

Single grade oils will always be better than multigrade oils for obvious reasons. Any oil depot will stock single grade oils for machinery and marine use.

I got mine from a chandlery beside a canal, apparently many canal boats have very old engines and the chandlery had a good stock of old style oils.
On My Bukh 20 I use SAE30 in the gearbox on the advice of an engineer who replaced the original gearbox ( as even in neutral the prop turned slowly -- a clutch problem) he assured me taht modern engine oils contained detergents which were not a good idea in a gearbox.

A single grade oil is not needed - see below:
Stright from ZF themselves (assuming you have the original ZF gearbox)
If you are still not convinced, talk to Bukh U.K. who still supply the ZF box.

SAE30 oil is easily obtained (in Australia) all four stroke lawnmowers use it. Maybe the same in the UK, it will be worth a look though.

Buhk Uk will tell you can use a 15/ 40 oil its quite ok. Why dont you contact the a buhk main dealer repairer in Northern Ireland and ask them what they use when they service a Buhk 20.
