Oil extractor

Hi,

Am planning to service the engine on my boat and was wondering if anyone in the Torquay / Brixham area have an oil extractor that i can borrow.

Many thanks

Jurgen

If you are going to be doing your own servicing regularly it is well worth buying one.

For £100 you can get one of these. The money you are saving going DIY will soon pay for it!

Oil

David J correct
I did an oil change last month and bought one of these. Great!!
Takes a while, but no stress, just keep on making sure the vacuums pumped up.
Will pay for its self just after a few changes. Great for the mower too!!

Used it for sucking up any water thats trapped in dificult places in the bilge

I use the cheaper Pella one too but it really does take a long time to extract the oil. Make sure the engine is hot before you start. There is a slightly larger Pella extractor at around £60 might be worth that if your budget will stretch that far

Few tricks I ve learned. The oil needs to be more than just warm. In fact, if you have a slow extraction on the first engine, the second has already cooled too much. Flow is very susceptible to the metal pipe touching anything..try to make sure it is floating in oil, and not hiting the bottom of the sump. Its also prone to getting blocked by anything at all!
There have been some comments that the lining inside the metal hose comes loose and blocks it. Dunno.. but sometimes its taken me more than an hour to get 11 litres out. If its too slow, check the hose.. pump something back down it to clear it again, or you will begin to get mildly bored.
And find a Volvo truck depo and the Volvo oil is a hell of alot cheaper if you are worried about using VDS oil.

I might fancy a day out to Brixham, and can bring my oil extractor. Depends on which day, though

Please PM me.

How do you manage that? My experience is that is quick! A bigger bore pipe might help.

Ref GJGM comment about pipe being blocked by bottom of the sump you could cut the end off at 45 degrees.
I just warm the engine, get some suction then find something else to do while it gets on with it.

I have always done my own servicing and getting oil out of my 2 x 380hp engines is a bit of a pain, dirty and time consuming. I have tried various different manual gizmos over the years plus devices that attach to an electric drilling machines and IMHO none have really made it easy, clean or quick.

A couple of years ago I thought there must be a better way and looked at electric pumps which looked quite expensive. Lo and behold when I saw the pumps on sale I found I had one gathering dust in the garage which had been there for years. It's basically a motor with jabsco impeller pump on the end. Nothing fancy and the same impeller style pump as used in all small yacht engines. I though that I will give it a go.

Best thing I ever did. I got a big container, heated the engines up, stuck a hose down the dip stick tube with the other end in the container, switched the motor on and sat back whilst it rapidly hosed the oil into the container. Absolutley effortless, clean and very quick. I can't recommend the electric route highly enough and makes changing oil almost a pleasure!

I meant to say in my last post that it takes about 5 to 10 mins to pump out 25 litres per engine. Enough time for a quick cup of tea while it's doing the work!
