I am thinking of buying the PELA vacuum oil extractor 6000. Has any one had any experience of using one of these.

Brilliant bit of kit...

It's a brilliant bit of kit. Be sure to run the engine up to warm before extracting the oil, it makes it quicker. Think you can still get them for about £23 plus delivery from Compass24.

Re: PELA - Brilliant bit of kit...

Third it. Takes all the mess out of oil extracting. Also good for a quick oil change on the car.

Re: PELA - Brilliant bit of kit...

Great for extracting liquids from all kinds of places, not just oil.

As well as oil changes, I use it to empty the bay under the engine, the last dregs from the bilges, and some places where water seems to collect but doesn get deep enough to drain away.

[/ QUOTE ]Dear John, May I suggest you use the search facility on these forums - an absolute mone of information on Pela oil extractors and their alternative uses.

BTW excellent piece of kit and for £12 not to be beaten (Compass is too expensive)....

I bought one after lots of posts on here !! Good kit - but pipe is prone to blocking very easy when used to drag out bottom of fuel tank ... bilges ... etc.

When syphoning out other things than engine oil - I have a piece of ally tube that I pass flexi tube down till it just exits other end ... then I tape the two so ally tube stays in place - this then makes supplied flexi-tube rigid to get into those nooks and crannies of bilges / tanks etc.

I plan to make up larger bore pipes to get round the clogging problem ... but can't find suitable "caps" to fit the container spout.

I did have one problem .... the sealing O ring that sits under the centre connection piece - takes the vacuum pump - this split and vacuum failed to work. To finish the job I managed to superglue the ring together and then put back .. back after 3 gluings - it refused to glue again ... Pela was contacted as the machine was only a few months old - they sent me replacement ring in post ... from Canada ! (Meanwhile I sent out one of my guys with the old ring to auto-factors to sewe if he could find similar ... bingo !! 25p from local auto-shop - identical ring.

Final comment - I have to admit that its main function - oil extraction is not what I praise mine for - it's the bilges and fuel tank work !!

...still pondering on the idea of using it to bleed the fuel system,

Same here - just bought a few fittings (tee and ball valve etc) to add to the fuel line so I can suck the diesel through from the tank.
It's one of those (few) things I've bought on a whim that has turned out to be worth every penny.

The Pela pump is definitely a good buy.

Whatever you do, don't buy one of those 12v jobbies on the market - I found mine a pain in the bum. You have to find somewhere to wedge the pump itself and a receptacle to feed the oil into. The worst bit is controlling the springy tubes - they "boing" about all over the place - usually when pumping - so deposit hot oil everywhere!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Oh...and then you knock over the container!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Pela - self-contained, integral receiver one pipe - very good. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I used the blank cap that is provided. I drilled it and fitted a brass nipple to fit some see-through hose I had. If the hose still has a bit of 'softness' to it you don't need a clip. It makes it easier to remove quickly if a bit of debris clogs the nipple. The nipple is easy to cap off with something so still acts as a blanking cap.

Agree with everything said. Excellent piece of kit but remember to warm the oil first. The first time I used mine the boat was out of the water and no access to water for engine cooling so did it with cold oil. Took forever! Couldn't believe the difference next time with warm oil!

Thought of using the blanking cap - trying to avid that !! But I think it's only way.

My intention is to create a flexi about 1m and then to an ally tube for poking into corners etc.

So off to DIY I think have a look at tubes / spigots etc.

Can someone check the size of the stopper used in wine making with those big glass "demejohns".
Had a friend who used to make his own wine and the stoppers were either rubber or cork and from memory were about the same size and were available everywhere.
Worth a try.
