Have just failed miserably to pump out my MD220 via the dipstick using a cheap electric oil pump, which is now in the bin!!! What I need is a proper brass one that fits onto the sump drain pipe. Any ideas where I can find one, the only ones I've seen so far are cheap ones that are designed to drain via the dipstick.

I just inadvertantly bought one from ASAP for £17.98 + vat and a beautiful thing it is too.

I just bought straight off the marinisation list and when it arrived on the counter h00 and myself were so impressed with it, I just had to have it. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I've binned couple of electric ones. I now use a PELA. Brilliant but costly - works by vacuum through the dipstick. Just depressurise the tank uysing the intergal manual pump and leave it to do the work. Tank holds 6 litres and auto-shuts off when full. It's also very clean to use . I have 17 litres of oil to pump out and it's been a boon.

Actually I have three, one on each engine and one on the genny, but I never use the ones on the engines, two long a job 27 litres in each! I have one of those big suction jobbies, which you poke down the dipstick hole, pump up and leave. I used to use it when doing the job professionally, excellent bit of kit.

The pella has to be the best , 46Quid but you can stand back , i can sit the pella in the cockpit and suck out the oil in the Engine sump,or the water and crap from the deisel tank. the satisfaction when you see the water globules and black bits coming out of the tank makes it all worth while.I,ve arranged the tank breather so the smallest nylon pipe goes in through the top of the tee piece and sits on the bottom of the tank.Makes filter life much easier.

Re: ...and here\'s a photo

Thats the beast PELA, couldn't remember the name and its worn off mine! never thought of using it for cleaning out the diesel tanks, but I will need a very long piece of little pipe for mine, but good idea! I used to use it for everything, pumping out the last bit of crap under engines etc. Best money I've spent for a while, I got mine from an industrial suppliers, for 25 squids, before they got famous!

Re: ...and here\'s a photo

I got mine from brown brothers in Torquay. I guess any brown brothers would have them, they are all over the country, motor factors mainly.

Buy a peltor vacumn pump the large upright one don't get the ball shaped one its crap. try Foxs chandlery Ipswich.

Re: ...and here\'s a photo

Yes, thats the one, I bought at the last LBS on special offer, but couldn't find anywhere to fit it on the engine or nearby where I could get a container under the spout! So I have fitted a flexible hose to the end and the other end fits over the drain pipe and I just pump into a container - works well. I have a drain pipe which is above the sump level so this works OK.

I'd rather be sailing... :-)

Sucking oil not eggs

At the risk of being very obvious.
When you used the electric pump was the oil hot? I once tried to remove the oil, using a small manual pump, from a Yanmar engine on a cold winter' day. Not surprisingly nowt came out!
