Can anyone recommend a ' through the dip stick pipe' suction device for changing engine oil?
I realise there are several on the market but would value anyones hands on experience using them.
Also where if known available from.
I have a Perkins 4108 diesel.
Many thanks.

I bought a Pela 6000 a few months ago for £19.95. Did the job well with no mess, but make sure the engine oil is nicely warm before you try otherwise it's like sucking treacle.

I use the Pela too, the 6.5 litre one. Its more expensive but I think it is stronger and have noticed working mechanics use it in preference to the 6000. It costs about £70 delivered and is an excellant oil extractor.

I too use a 12v suction oil changer. the main reason for having the oil warm is that it leaves the inside of the sump like new. In the past I have worked on a number of mini car engines and it is obvious once you take the sump off if the oil has been warm when changed.
Essentially the warm oil incorporates all the rubbish built up in the sump and it is therefore removed with the oil.
I suppose it would make the oil less viscous aswell.

I bought one a couple of years back. Can't remember the make but the receiver is spherical rather than the cylindrical alternative.

The end of the hose designed to go into the dipstick hole appears to be bicycle brake cable outer. As such the bore is a bit narrow and restricts flow to a trickle even when the oil is very warm. Fortunately my engine has a dedicated vacuum drain pipe, and with a bit of extra tube and some hose clamps I can fit a larger diameter pipe to that and the 8 litres is out in the time it takes to boil a kettle, including emptying the receiver half way through.

I think Compass do them in one form or another, but mine was from a chandlers at about £30. Would not want to go back to the hand pump.

I use a little pump thingy that attaches to a hand-held drill. Works very well and is useful for other stuff too.

Pela, no probs for me. Was advised that the oil be very warm if you have a big engine as the flow is slow enough for it to cool if you need to fill the pump tank more than once. Useful for bilge cleaning as well, although the hose tends to block easily if there is any rag or similar to find.

Can you tell me how to find the Pela on the Compass site please? I have tried the different groups and the search facility doesn't work. Thanks.

As I mentioned, the Search facility doesn't seem to work. When I move the cursor over the search box the little 'hand' symbol doesn't appear for some reason, therefore can't click on it . Being a technoclutz, I'm buggered! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes, the Compass Site is not particularly clear.
1) go to www.compass24.com
2) Click on Info. on Line box - yellow triangle shape?
3) Click on Spring Refit Check
Scroll down and the Pela appears in a while.
If that doesn't work then ring them on 08704 204075 or fax 08704 204095
If you go via henkm's route you must be careful about which of the 2 sizes you want. For £16.95 you only get a 2.5 litre tank. The 6 litre one is marked as Vacuum Tank on this page and costs £19.95
