I have a KM4A1 transmission. It says on the case Capacity 1.3ltr. I sucked out 750ml and put back in 750ml. The manual says fill to the line on the dip stick. The 750ml did this with the stick screwed all the way down.
Does it sound like I'm doing the right thing? Is there really 1.3ltr in the case and I haven't sucked it all out? I tried every which way to get the Pela tube to go in further, but the distance it went in suggested it got to the bottom of the case.

It's a 4JH3E. The manual for this engine describes a different transmission than the one fitted.

If I only put 750ml in to get to the top fill line where do you think the 1.3ltr marked on the casing comes from?

The manual I linked includes your KM4A1 transmission, see the screenshot below:

As you did not specify your engine type in your original post this manual is for a different engine, but as the gearbox is the same the method of mesuring the gearbox oil level should also be the same.

If you are incorrectly screwing in the dipstick to measure the oil level it will read full at a lower total volume.

The vacuum pumps never suck out all the oil. You also need to account for tilt of the engine, but if the dipstick reads correctly, when measured in the correct manner (with the dipstick unscrewed) it should be OK.

What was the level on the dipstick before you started? As previously stated, the dipstick should not be screwed in when measuring.

My guess is you have never had sufficient oil in if you have measured with the dipstick screwed in.

I found the dipstick very sensitive on my SD60. Nothing shown, then added 0.4l and it was way over the max. Capacity of this saildrive is 3.3l. I had to drain about 0.2l to get it to the max line. (Oil changed yesterday.)

You might be right. The dipstick is hard to read as well as the level being sensitive. There's about the same amount of oil in now as came out.... around 750ml.
I don't understand where the 1.3ltr 'advertised' capacity comes from?? I'm pretty sure the Pela tube reached to bottom of the casing.
