Oh, well. I suppose 5 years of Navionics for £14.99 was a bargain.

Navionics stopped working on my Android phone. Navionics says:

"Thank you for the additional information.

We regret to inform you that this app was obsoleted years ago, but as far as
Navionics is concerned, you can continue to use it “as it is” indefinitely
within the same device and OS. Unfortunately the new Android Software does not
permit the use of older apps, but we have no control over what Android does. You
will find that many many other apps have ceased working from the introduction of
new Android Software Updates.

When the new Mobile Apps were released, a banner ad was deployed within our
first generation Apps indicating they were being removed from Google Play. We
also indicated the original Apps would no longer be offered updates or support
and we could not guarantee their functionality with future OS releases.

At the time we also encouraged users to migrate to our new application for its
larger coverage area, updated chart data, and many new features. These new
features were a result of feedback we received from our users; however, they
were not possible to include with the build of the original apps. Most of our
users took the opportunity to purchase our new Apps.

That said, if you consider that you have been using your charts for many years,
and that in this time about 2,000 changes per day have been applied to the
charts, buying an entirely new set of charts would be highly recommended for
safety reasons, regardless of who the manufacturer is and regardless of whether
they are paper or electronic.

Just as a benchmark, please consider the fact that Hydrographic Offices all over
the world mandate that no chart should be used for more than one year, after
which they should be deleted.

If you have any other question, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Best regards,
Navionics Customer Service"

Hands up those of us who change our charts (paper or electronic) every year?

Every six months electronic - thanks Navionics :)

Paper every few years, but we only use them for passage not pilotage where Navionics on the iPad is king.

I've not upgraded the OS on my phone to avoid that scenario.
everything works as I want it to and I've not yet seen a compelling enough reason to upgrade OS or App.

Yes, upgrading OS was my mistake. I gave the old phone away so the option of moving back wasn't available.

I found them easy to get in touch with.

Three quid a year for navigation? I suspect you'd have spent more than that on 2B pencils!

As a long time Mac user, I've found it's always wise to see what the updated OS does before updating it, especially if you're running old software. As I do. If your android 4.2 is working as well as you want it, then leave it be. Updating software does not always mean improvements - a lot of functionality can be removed (I'm thinking of Final Cut, iTunes and some CD/DVD burning software), and there's a trend at the moment to insisting on access to your contacts list to obtain email and phone numbers. Specifically thinking about the Facebook chat app that requested you to allow the app to call and message people on your contacts list at your expense. Sometimes it's possible to reinstall the old Android version you were using, but not often!

You shouldn't need to with paper provided you apply corrections regularly. If you leave it too long, the list of corrections isn't available. Don't know how you update electric charts.
Back to main topic - will my Navionics app work on a new Hudl ?

I would never buy from them again either. I bought the non HD version (as all that was available) about 2 years ago for my Asus tablet. Within 3 months they brought the HD version out and stopped the one I had from working on the tablet. No response for months from them until I was given a contact in their UK office. She was apologetic, saying there was nothing she could do and I was not the first person they were ignoring. About a year later it suddenly was working again - and still does now. They will not have more of my money though after that episode.

Always worked well for me, getting on for four years, nice company to deal with, they always reply within 24hours to queries and a couple of suggestions. What they need is a strong competition to keep them keen so I hope a lot of people are using their competitors.

Recently added their sounder module for about £2 and it's more use than I thought it would be.

Yes - they are a bit frustrating but £14.99 was an amazing bargain. Electronic charts for UK, France, Holland for less than the cost of a single paper one. I've had 4 years out of it and it is still going strong - it may not be getting updated now but still fun to have for passage planning from the office :)

The current offering is not as good value - but still seems a pretty polished offering compared to the alternatives.

I think its pretty good and works straight out of the (virtual) box with no faffing about. I made the mistake of uninstalling it from my basic Samsung phone and now can't re-install due to 'lack of internal memory'. Why can't it be installed on my capacious micro SD card?

I got one during the week and ran the free trial of the HD Navionics with no bother.
