Oh No - It\'s the Raffle

It’s time for the annual Yacht Club Dinner and that most dreaded of all events, the Raffle. Why do they have to have so many prizes, all of them useless for sailors, except the wine bottle, which is usually just useless. Could it be that, in the modern world, everyone has to be a winner? And why are we expected to applaud every time some unlucky person has there ticket drawn out of the cardboard box?

Why can’t they just have just one good prize, worth winning, that is also useful to us sailors.

What are your suggestions for the ideal prize – say for about 100 people buying tickets?

What is the worst prize you were lucky enough to win?

I\'m with you totally, and .....

you've not even mentioned how tedious the whole thing is.

Does anyone enjoy the palaver?

Why not just buy one voucher from your favourite chandler?

Hold on.....our club doesn't have a raffle.....rant over (though I regularly attend a local non-sailing 'do' where the raffle really spoils an otherwise excellent evening out).

And it is no better for the organiser either trying to think of imaginative but CHEAP prizes as there is no point running the raffle unless it is going to make money or can you blag a prize from some company so you don't have to spend anything. I hate it!

Minimum purchase £5 so take about £600. £100 voucher for Mailspeed and a few decent bottles (1 champagne, 2 whisky, 3 wine). £400 profit. Who wants the soaps and other unwanted gifts that people donate? You could use those in a separate tombola running before and after the dinner with proceeds to a charity (or RNLI).

I once went to a quiz night where the winners got a packet of Smarties each and the losers (us!) got a bottle of wine each as consolation. Nobody complained!

Ideas for prizes. The best we get at our yacht club is vouchers. The voucher can be used at the bar or at the nominated chandelry.
The chandelry thing is interesting in that you the club may pay full price for the voucher or get a discount or even a donation. Almost always the winner spends even more at the chandelry.

Other ideas can be fire extinguisher, first aid kit. tool kit, food storage boxes set of drinking glasses, leather man type tool, spray jacket (large) all of which can be of some use to non boaties. olewill
