Oh goody, goody another anchor debate

Re: Kelp

Hi Nick, trust you're both fine and are waiting for a suitable weather window.

Just about the Craighouse thing, it wasn't clear to me what the weather conditions were like in your description. The fact that you picked up a large amount of kelp, and that, in your blog, "the kelp..... had obviously been acting as a sea anchor and keeping her bows up into the wind" indicates that you had probably dragged.

If your choice of anchor "does however tend to come up with a huge ball of kelp on it", then either you're choosing to anchor in weedy places (unavoidable in some areas), or else, harrumph, you're, errrmm, dragging fairly regularly..... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Either way, if you were really unhappy about your anchor dragging regularly, you'd have changed it. Which you haven't, therefore it's all tickety boo.

The noo.

Regards to Kathy.

Re: Kelp

So what exactly is one to glean from that
is it
a) webcrust us a crappy anchorer
b)webcrust has a crappy anchor
c) webcrust always seems to anchor in crap
d) Craighouse is crappy if you are crappy at anchoring and have a crappy anchor

?

Re: Kelp

That wasn't my interpretation at all. Mine was, we all drag in crappy/kelp/weather conditions (unless of course you've used a Rocna or a Hylas, right /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif), and we're all equally happy with our crappy anchors, cos if we we weren't we'd have dumped them on eBay and bought ourselves sooper dooper anchors.

Mind you, you might have a point there....

Sorry but HYLAS, is no longer manufacturing anchors, but he is retired and only enjoying travels around South America..

To have an anchor that hold on kelp.. see SPADE who is still manufacturing anchors.. (without Hylas.. :0) )

Hylas,

Oh gezz you guys calm down a smidgen /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was just commenting on one blokes findings with an un-named (but guessed well by a few) alloy anchor and how well it did stand up to what must have been some seriously big loads.

I'm of the belief that while alloy anchors certianly do have a place most people would be better off with steel ones. The nature of the 2 beasts do say steel should out last alloy in a few important places, strength being just one.

Then again usng an oversized alloy would diminish the strength issue and dramatically increase holding if one wanted to head down that track.

Then again a correctly sized steel is a lot easier to fit to the boat.

Then again I have and alloy anchor on my own boat so what does that say? Yes I race it and we do tend to be quite anal about weight /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And yet then again I also have a bigger steel one to make mum happy when crusing.

So I don't have a problem with alloy anchors and come back to the 'horses for courses' place again. Generally most horses are probably better off in the long run by going down the steel course.
