I'm suffering a bout of old age confusion here? I really am questioning my own abilities. I know that I'm right, but I have that "back of the head" feeling that I need someone to tell me I've got it right.

Problem:

I have to deliver a new 45' yacht from the Hamble to the Medway in March via Ramsgate. I have checked the tides etc and come up with a basic plan.

That is, I need to be on the Owers at HW Dover -4 hrs. Which means I need to leave Hamble Point Marina at (approx) HW Dover give or take?

I know that there are many things to be taken into account but I'm asssuming that there will be favourable winds etc. The boat will do 7 knts under engine but can achive up to 12 knts under sail quite easily.

Have I got it right?

Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Peter

Re: Long way or short way?

Well - you'd possibly save a bit of time going straight round the Mull - Because you could lay off over to the Irish side and then baz straight down the west side of the Isle of Man.
I know it seems quicker through the Crinan and there's the relative shelter of the Clyde but its not always what its cracked up to be.
Hope that helps

HW Dover?

The strongest tides you are likely to meet will be in the Solent, so I'd worry more about starting the trip in relation to HW Portsmouth, and aim to be out of the Hamble at HW Portsmouth -1 which would get you 7 or 8 hours of east-going, well clear of the Owers and into an area were the next west going tide is rather slacker.

Re: HW Dover?

really? sure the H should be a L ;-) in fact I'd leave Portsmouth HW+3 and just catch a bit of favourable tide down Soton water and the North Channel before the main flood starts

Ruckles napped

Glad to see your paying attention at the back there.

Leave Hamble at LW Portsmouth - 1 was what I meant to say, just when the east going starts off Soton Water. More or less.

Re: HW Dover?

I haven't done the calculations but I'm sure The Boatman is right. The important strategic point here is to pick up the flood at South Foreland so that you carry 12 to 15 hours of favourable tide round north Foreland and into the Thames - much more important that a couple of hours of flood or ebb in the Solent.

It's not a wind up, I'm feeling like a TOG at the moment. Confusion reigns<s>.

I've done this trip before as a delivery skipper but all of my log notes were left on the boat.

I seem to remember that I can catch the north bound tide all the way to Beachy Head and then pick up the north going tide past Dover into Ramsgate.

If I time it right, I should get no foul tide the whole way.

I was rather hoping that a forum member had done the trip and could confirm my thoughts?

I no longer posses such an article, being a non-boat owning member of this forum. I was however hoping that some nice member would either tell me from experience or look it up for me?
The first time I will get a chance to do the workings is when I step aboard. What I would really like to know is when the best time to arrive would be. I would rather not have to sit there for 12 hrs because I got it wrong<s>
