After a very lovely day in Villefranche yesterday, the plan today was for a similarly idle time at the Iles des Lerins off Cannes. Alas my cunning plan was scuppered shortly after we anchored, when a critical bit of the bimini frame decided to commit hari-kiri and jump overboard.

So, a relaxing day it has not been; although we're only in 5m of water and the vis is crystal, we are over long weed and I can't see the offending bit of stainless. In fact I've spent most of the day snorkelling looking for it, but all I have to show for my efforts is a sunburnt back. Bah.

I'm not quite ready to give up yet though, so I need to get hold of some scuba gear and come back tomorrow. Anybody got anything in PV? Or is it a case of heading down to The dive centre at La Rague and renting.

if the frame has been cold-worked or welded, there's a chance that it has acquired some magnetic permeability.

One of Nauticalia's Sea Searcher magnets on board, or dismantle a hard disc to get the neodymium magnets out ?

Good shout, and we do have a sea searcher on board, and I've been using it all day - not so much in the hope that it would pick anything up, but just in case I could hear the chink of metal on metal. Nada, unfortunately.

Hi. I'm taxiing at T5 now on the late BA. Have dive kit on match with full tanks. I'll be over to anchor in villefranche tomorrow 11am. Or if you come back to pv I can lend you the gear. I have TCM on board for lunch tomorrow
Gotta turn fone off now

I've got my scuba kit on my boat in Falmouth, don't suppose that helps much!

Seriously, wear a T shirt if snorkelling, drop a weight on a line with say a fender attached, and then use that as your reference point, otherwise it will be like the proverbial needle in a hay stack.

Good luck!

Thanks ljs, yep, spiral search from sunk datum is the plan. Apart from getting scuba gear, biggest prob at the islands on a Saturday in July will be trying to get back to the same spot, it's a popular place.

I,am "in" for 2weeks from20 th this month ( no particitular plan ) -and have dive gear + v near Lerins .
Ok where do we look ?
Some sort of chart / map -ette ?
If we recover -I,ll drop it off @ your boat as we will be visiting our property @ Antibes any how -no trouble .

Ok. Ignore my VF comment. I meant lerins. Ok maybe see you, or do you wanna give me a lat long in case I go early and I'll put a towel on a deck chair for you

There is more to this story! Having had I a T40 for 4 years I know them quite well. How did a piece of the frame spontaneously detach itself and leap into the air?

What were you doing with it!

Jeremy

Morning L

The missing bit is located on the south side of the channel, east of the little harbour at 43 30 582 N 07 03 066 E. It's a slightly bent bit of stainless tube about two feet long with fittings at each end.

Position is 43 30 582 N 07 03 066 E. We have forumite guests coming to the boat at PV at 11am so i guess we won't be there until noon. See you there? I'll text you. Thanks for the help.

It's the rear canopy support arm, the one with the ball joint fastening. Ball joint retaining clip was loose and had been supplemented with a cable tie. Bimini was in the process of being folded back when the support arm departed the boat.

Yes there is slightly more to this story but it would be ungallant of me to elaborate...

we want photographic proof of F.O.R.U.M (Fleet Of Really Useful Moboists) in action, please.
