Can anyone advise me whether it is bad idea to be thinking that Ogmore or Southerndown beaches are possible places to visit, anchoring off and tendering in for some time on the beach. Would only be considering it in settled conditions. I have not seen these locations mentioned anywhere else in the forum, so maybe there is a good reason to avoid them. I can see that Tusker Rock and nash sands would need thought. Based in Penarth yacht Tiger 2.

Ogmore / Southerdown

I have been fishing there and visited the beaches . Nash passage is your best bet unless you want to go around Nash sands prohibited area to West Nash Buoy and come in that way , Safer but a bit longer .Ogmore beach is usually quieter as less access . Southerdown has easy access from the road so busier . Not a lot to see but Merthyr Mawr is probably the last vestige of the biggest dune area in Europe .

I've lived in Bridgend for the last 20 years or so (just moved away) and seen a few yachts off Southerndown, usually making passage it has to be said. I've never seen a yacht off Ogmore, only fishing boats. I'd be very nervous leaving a yacht anchored off there, with the rocks, shallows and, of course, the river, with fairly strong and unpredictable currents.

Maybe not one I will try with the younger family at first then, but I might give it a go at some point with my old man for a bit of fishing and for the challenge. We did some drift fishing last year inside of Nash sands which was good. For a beach landing I might try off Minehead instead.
I am basically trying to work out easy day/weekend destinations from Cardiff to sail to that gives my young ones somewhere land based to play for a bit.
