is it simply out of sight of land?
or is it when conditions are more ocean like

i have sailed recently out of bantry bay north and been told that the water is more ocean than coastal and therefore ofshore?

Offshore is mostly in your head. To me, offshore is when you have to spend a night at sea because you couldn't reach port even if you wanted to.

I think! inshore is 2 miles, coastal is up to 12 Miles, offshore is anything over, then you have blue water or Ocean.

where does offshore start?

I like this definition best
"A company incorporated in a country where there is little government control and/or low tax rates."

though this one in my own field is

"Outsourcing is an arrangement in which one company provides services for another company that could also be or usually have been provided in-house. Offshore simply means "any country other than your own."

Far easier to understand than vague miles away from your or anyone elses shore.

Think it was a Nautical Question not a Financial question.

Sailing wise I guess the best definition is the areas in the GMDSS system outside area A1 ie VHF coverage.
not really relevent, That is a distress system, and rightly they make aware Its limitations to usually line of Sight, transmitter to reciever. definitions go much further than that, Boat Design, Boat Equipment, weather forcasts insurance etc.

And where does offshore end? 150 miles from a safe haven as for YM offshore?

From a racing perspective it's mainly about how long the race takes. Though it's also about how exposed the course is.

If it will be overnight it's an offshore race.

I'd say over 12 miles from the coast. That puts you out side of territorial waters so it works with the financial definition too.
There's no financial Institutions Off shore I'm pretty sure financial institutions are all land locked, If you speaking about british shores the question relates to africa I believe.

60 Nm+

MCA, consider "at sea" 60 Nm from a safe haven ( hence requirement for ENG 1 medical cert).
RYA, consider offshore is 60 Nm + from a safe haven. Up until then, you are a "Coastal Skipper".

So, 60 Nm+, seems to have some significance!
