Few threads go over 100 replies, but my last one on flying the Union Jack did. It seems the subject of ensigns brings out the best in all of us.:D

Went into Weymouth last Thursday. Really pleased to see a small motor boat coming back from a day's fishing flying a Union Jack.

Where are the MCA when you really need them?

You'd need one of the builders from the site next to the marina...but where to find a cowboy and indian in Gosport? Hmmmm

The sailing world is full of cowboys. In Gosport alone, there's <deleted on legal advice>, not to mention <deleted on legal advice> ... and of course <deleted, burnt and shredded on legal advice>.

Flying the Union Flag anywhere, what is going on: " It remains a criminal offence under the Merchant Shipping (Registration, etc.) Act 1993 to display the Union Flag (other than the "Pilot Jack") from a British ship." (This applies to to non-military vesels)

That act says nothing about flags. You may be thinking of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. And there is no specific prohibition there on the Union flag (commonly called the Union Jack) - it's lumped in, by inference, with "any distinctive national colours". You're in exactly the same trouble, theoretically, if you fly the french flag.
