Official Warning re Mozambique

WARNING

Due to the rising frequency of human-lion encounters, the Ministry of Fish and Wildlife, Inhambane Branch, Mozambique is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and any motorcyclists that use the out-of-doors in a recreational or work-related function to take extra precautions while in the bush.

We advise outdoorsmen to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as to give advanced warning to any lions that might be close by so you don't take them by surprise.

We also advise anyone using the out-of-doors to carry "Pepper Spray" with him in case of an encounter with a lion.

Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for fresh lion activity, and be able to tell the difference between lion cub droppings and big lion droppings. Lion cub droppings are smaller and contain lots of berries and dassie fur. Big lion droppings have bells in it, and smells like pepper.

It's purrfect. Lions take pride in their diet, and pepper and bells form the mane part of their menu. In fact, they regularly prey that the supply doesn't dry up, because that would be a cat-astrophe.

Can you advise would be mobile lunch/dinner to bring some salt aswell as the pepper?

We know it's not good for our hearts but every lion deserves a vice!

Takes me back a bit !
Our lads doing clandestine patrols from Rhodesia into Mozambique in the 70s (while Portugal still regarded it as one of their "provinces") found that the Portuguese National Service conscripts forced into doing patrols in the bush were warning of their approach by tapping their magazine cases against their rifle barrels as they walked. This noise signified to local terrorists that they had no warlike intent and meant that they would be allowed to pass unhindered.

Just had a Flashback reading the reference to LM..... I assume you mean Lorenço Marques. My first two ports of call when I started as a deck apprentice in 1954 were Durban (The Old Playhouse~Smith Street) and LM (The Penguin Club, where I met Maria and the end of my childhood). A few miles up river from the town was anchored an old sailing ship, still masted and imposing, but deserted and rotting. Apparently it had been there for many decades. I seem to remember someone saying that it had been one of the "Hill" ships, if that means anything to anyone.
Lorenço Marques was an extremely smart place in those days of Portugese colonialism and exploitation. I saw recent footage of it again last year on a TV programme. It made Kabul look like Mayfair. When is the world going to stop kidding itself about sub-Sahara Africa?

The only consolation is that they are just as poor at genocide as they are at democracy - eg. there are still people alive (just) in the Southern Sudan despite 50 years of genocide.
