it has finally dawned on me: I am going trhough my last metamorphosis into a Grumpy Old G*t.

At yesterday's SIBS we had a look-see at a few new boats... and down below there was so much IKEA feel. Even some of the very expensive ones.

One exception: Rustlers (well done to them - if only I could afford one).

Maybe it was my punishement for having used the IKEA car park to get a cheap place

I suppose it made me happy of Tigger. At least her veneers are real wood.

My dad at 80 recons that IKEA furnature lasts about 5 years, like a modern relationship so it's fit for purpose.

I don't know about IKEA boats though.

I don't admit to being a grumpy old git (may be I'm in denial) but I still don't like the IKEA woodwork. I claim I'm just being pragmatic and considering the re-sale value.

I really liked the Elan 340 and would have seriously considered buying one for round the cans racing and a bit of cruising. Unlike many so-called cruiser-racers she has a well designed cockpit for racing.

However, the IKEA woodwork down below looks like it wouldn't survive five years of round the cans racing without looking very shabby. I could see myself having to really drop the price just to shift her when I came to sell.

I realise that an Elan is not an Arcona or Finngulf, but still even woodwork up to Bavaria's standards of a few years ago would have been a lot better.

My gf and I (both well into our 40s) looked at boats at last year's London show, as we were really distraught with the ability of our Nic 32 to get into marinas, and began to plan what we wanted in a more modern upgrade...something with a bit less than a full keel!

The problem was that only the Rustlers that I had seen at last year's SBS, and the Najads, really felt nice below. Spoiled we are because our 44 year-old joinery is SO much better than many brand new boats, even expensive ones...

We came home and had a bowthruster installed instead of upgrading...at least until I can afford a used Najad or Rustler.
