I've just had an offer for Stingo of US$40,000. I am prepared to prepared to drop my pants to the extent of an offer in the region of US$65,000. The buyer is a relatively renowned single-hander (I've read her book), so she probably knows what she's talking about...

So team, how do I persuade her that she needs to lift her skirt to the extent of another US$15,000?

Do you mean $25,000 more?

I would just say thanks for the offer and let her go. If she is interested at more money, she'll come back.

Then... if you would seriously consider $65,000, (£35,000+/), and you believe that £43,000 is a keen price, drop it to £39,995 offers considered.. then see what happens.

Tell her what you've done.

A lot of US sailors get their boats 'appraised',the ensuing higher value is usually quoted in the adverts,
'' appraised by the bank at $...75000, A snip, turnkey condition, ready to go at $55000''
Cant say whether it works though.

we are very keen on a particular boat right now, but the broker keeps reminding me 'there is another interested party'. I don't believe them, because of the way they keep enticing me to proceed further.

Not suggesting you should do such a devious thing though ! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nobody believes it, even if it's true.

With houses, I never lied about the existence of another party... most people would say they were not interested in competing and look elsewhere.

If an agent ever told me there was someone interested in a house I was looking at, I suggested that they sold it to them but, if something went wrong, to let me know.

I've sold stuff at less than I wanted, but it allows you to move on. You may hang on and never get another sniff.
Try her for some more, but don't her go.

I imagine she's based her offer on the assumption that you just want to get shot of it. That's a common situation when a boat is being sold away from home.

If you really want a better price you'd do better to bring the boat back to Europe.

If you're hoping to get a very much higher price from this buyer you'll have to make it clear that you won't haggle based on her offer but much closer to the asking. I doubt you'll have much luck.
