My Dad went to hospital and was on a ventikator for a few days, when he left his voice was ok but then he totally lost it, we thought maybe a throat infection it's been about 6 weeks now it's 50% back but wondering is this normal?

Not me directly, but I knew someone involved in a horific motorbike accident (made worse by the fact it was caused by bad riding from another biker rounding a corner on the wrong side of the road)

He was lucky indeed to survive at all, and against all odds after initially being confined to a wheelchair, regained the use of his legs and went on to ride again.

Part of the emergency surgery damaged some of his vocal chords, so his voice is now very different and more of a rough whisper.

when you are ventilated in intensive care, the tube that goes down your windpipe goes through your vocal cords, so hoarseness is a frequent problem post op/itu/intubation for whatever

should settle. rest it whilst he is still hoarse

if persists ENT can look at it with small flexible endoscope

He would have had an Endotracheal Tube positioned between his vocal cords if he was on a "ventikator". The pressure of tube on the vocal cords can cause them to ulcerate and will make it difficult to phonate. Give them a chance to heal - may take months, and he can still be left with a hoarse voice if there is residual scarring.

Hope it puts your mind at rest a little - my mate was in intensive care for some weeks and after a few months his voice came back to normal. Mind you, his sense of smell isn't much cop nowadays... He watches me sniff the water before putting the kettle on just in case I should forget to pump the lines clear.

Rob.

P.S. an experience like this can change your values in life. He's since married his partner, the first thing he wanted to do when he came round.

I'd have thought you'd get better response to this query in the Lounge. There are a few medical men and surgeons post on here, but perhaps don't look in PBO.
Cutter is one.

Trouble on here is that unless you say "I am a doctor" we just assume you are passing an opinion as that happens all the time.
So if it's a qualified opinion, tell us.
