We plan to cruise the Ionian islands in July and August but I'm not sure about this cruising tax I've heard mentioned.
Does anyone know if the taxed is still charged and if so how much and how is it collected.

Many thanks

I spent 5 months in Greece...

in 2002.

For a 33 foot boat, the Cruising Tariff and transit Log combined came to 87 Euros. We bought the boat in Rhodes, where the tax is stringently and forcefully applied. Arguing that its illegal does not work - they've heard it all before.

Once away from the Turkish coast, the Greek Customs became less and less interested, though they did inspect our documents in Piraeus and some places in the Golf of Corinth.

Hope this is useful.

You will be asked for the documents sometimes in the Ionian too. Not everywhere and only when in a port with Port Police. There is no hard and fast rule otherwise. Some ports ask for it everytime and others never but you cannot rely on this to escape being asked. You can take a chance, travel without one and pay up with a polite smile when they catch you. Don't bother arguing because the police don't want to ask you. It is just their job and they would rather be watching TV or snoozing in the sun.
