Intending to make my first cross Channel trip this weekend, Harwich - Dunkerque. Have all my paperwork, passports, Euro's etc just curious as to procedure leaving UK waters and entering French waters with regards to customs. I will be flying the French courtesy flag - is there anything else I should do? Any VHF rules?

TIA Jim

Not sure this is necessary as he will remain in EU waters. Just listen to the local port operations channels and dual watch 16. Upon reaching your destination you may have to complete a rather tedious form as the UK is not signed up to the Schengen Convention.

No problem, you used to have to fly it but mostly the French would just shrug their shoulders and tell you to take it down!

Recall first time to Channel Islands only a few years back where Q is required, but it was also the subject of titters from locals and more experienced cruisers, and totally ignored by port officials.
Agree with others it is not needed for France, but then to my knowledge I would not have thought the Schengen entry form is needed either. I've found it is Holland who get retentive about that, but IMHO never France.
Enjoy

I've never even seen a schengen form in France! Was once told off gently by nice customs lady in StPP for not flying Q on arrival from France.

Keeping a good ear on the VHF is essential to avoid the wrath of the port control before you even get there. Know the channels and whether you need to report in or not. If they use visual signals (lights) make sure you obey them. Not sure if Dunks does, but they do at Ostende for instance, check the almanac. Keep an eye for the big boys coming in behind. Leaving UK is no issue if going to another EU country. Weather generally looks good for the w/e. Have a great time.

thanks - yes weather forecast looks pretty good at the moment - tides are perfect. Another quick Q. for anyone whos been into Dunkerque from Ramsgateish - which entry channel is preferred, east or west? - I am planning on using the east.

On the issue of paperwork, I have thought once or twice of going over to France but I have no qualification (self taught).
I have the insurance, SSR registration card and numbered Radio licence and operators certificate, add the passport what problems am I likely to have.

Thanks for any comments. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You don't need any qualifications. SSR, passport and other docs you mentioned will be fine. It's probably wise to take Vat receipt for boat - not many people are asked, but can cause problems
