Ofcom - why isn\'t my amateur licence shown on their website?

One would normally ask that question of Ofcom, not YBW but I don't understand half the questions in their FAQs so I am unlikely to understand their answers and there is a good chance that another Amateur with a Ships Radio Licence can help.

I have my Ships Radio Licence in hard copy form (they sent it free, unrequested) and I can access and download my Ships Radio Licence online so there seems to be nothing wrong with my PC setup, passwords, etc.

At around the same time that they sent me the Ships Radio Licence they sent me a new amateur certificate, Full, with all the correct details, a starting date and no end date. Nowhere on the document can I see an expiry date but it does include the licence number and was issued 27/3/07, so very recent.

However, this amateur licence does not appear on the Ofcom site when I log on yet there is reference made to Amateur licences in general and a facility to apply for one. Although I have all the documents to apply for a licence I already have one and there is no facility to tell them that I already have one, and to give them their licence number!

Is it simply that Ofcom have made a mistake in my case, am I looking in the wrong place, or is that just how they do it?

Many thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have just gone to the site and registered my amateur radio licence and they said the login details will be sent to me within the next 5 working days.

So, when that arrives I will find out if you can call up your licence details or not! and let you know.

Thanks guys.

When I first registered I chose a password and they then sent me a username by post. That's when I went online and found that all was OK (other than severe problems with getting the setting right to download the pdf) with the marine licence but the ham does not appear there at all - it has a link for 'amateur licences' but when you click it all it is is a means for registering an amateur licence. The weird thing is that they have only just issued me with a new-style paper one and in any case there is no way to insert the licence number, only the RSGB exam/candidate details.

Thanks for looking into it for me - even though I have the paper copies the world is going electronic so if one is not tickety-boo electronically, one could be air-brushed into history. Within a decade there will be nobody left answering phones and opening post.

[/ QUOTE ] Generally people have found Ofcom helpful on the phone so why not give them a call. That might be all that is necessary to get your Ham licence details on to the new system.

I try to avoid phoning the UK as it is expensive (we know about all the various cards, etc. and have tried most if not all). However, I have looked at the Ofcom website and note two things in their favour:-

1. They use a normal geographical number and not 0870 premium rate numbers. They should be congratulated for that - most organisations and private companies are too greedy to stay with geographical numbers.

2. They publish a comprehensive list of senior management with emails and names. That is very unusual and to be commended.

I'll try sending a short, polite, email to one of the managers to see if they can refer me to the correct department.

Many thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You need to get it sorted as I have just looked again and read that you have to validate the licence every 5 years or it will expire!!

the system doesnt always pick up the other licences - usual computer type problem - full stop in a different place and it thinks you are a different person.

Rang them up, spoke to a charming lady who said she would put both my ship and ham licence together, and a day later she had done.

TBH, they dont seem to be any worse than any other organisation these days. Just try getting your bank to respond to a computer issue!

Re: Ofcom - why isn\'t my amateur licence shown on their website?

When I had a query with Ofcom regarding the non-action of the change of my boat details on the MARS database, an e-mail was all it took, I received an e-mail form them and everything was changed.

they seem(ed) to be very reponsive to e-mails.
