I'm thinking of buying an Oceanis 393 Clipper, as I beleive it will be a good compromise for my young family. Does anyone have any strong views either way about this yacht in comparison to similar makes/types? Cheers.

i like the look of these, however i hear that as they have very high freeboard it can be a bit like parking a cork when the wind gets up.

thanks for answering; isn't that the same for most of these plastic fantasies?

the beneteau first range tend to have less free board. however if your after a family boat the oceanis' would i suspecet suit you better than say the 40.7. is all a matter of personal preferance.

Berthing my 393 gives no problems. I normally berth stern-to, and she behaves extremely well, as she does when berthing bow-to. Like any boat, practice makes all the difference: she is consistent in what she does. Allow for tide and wind and all will be fine. She can be handled by two without a problem.

The 393 is a lovely boat. She sails well, is pretty, and is a great design. Down below, she is very well laid out. The two shower/heads are a great bonus. All in all, I think the 393 is great value. The proof of Beneteau and Jeanneau is in the sailing: they survive charter use incredibly well. That fact alone tells its own story.

Appears to be a real winner, there are a ruck of them at our marina already and most seem happy with them. Parking not a problem, but if you are inexperienced or unsure then get the dealer to throw in a few days tuition for you and SWMBO with a qualified professional who will have you both expert level in a couple of days at the most.

We just got back from levkas greece having sailed a new 393 from frejus france since August via Sicily Sardinia and Corsica. The boat was great for my wife and me who have limited experience. No mechanical problems, easy to handle etc, plenty of space for us plus far far too much kit. It does slam when motoring upwind in a big sea - so sail upwind instead and its better. If poss then get a Yanmar engine, ditch the standard brittanny anchor ASAP in favour of a delta, CQR or Spade and get a lot more chain. Also get a third reef in the main - The second reef overpowers after c. 25 kts.

Ours was a cancellation and came with a very expensive bowthruster already fitted. This was helpful for the first week with side winds while berthing but we didnt use it at all in the last 2 months as once you get used to reversing you dont need it.

I'm in the market for one of these as well. Just sold my 40.7 and believe the 393 is a great boat for the money. Its well designed below, will do coastal cruising with ease and has a nice turn of perforance while not over powering you. I also like the open stern which makes boarding easy, I like the offset saloon (you dont have to move to let someone go foward), I like the second loo (a must on a cruising boat). Yes it does have very high freeboard but this makes the boat very dry. Parking any of the recent beneteaus is easy - all respond very well to the controls and turn on a dime.

Thanks for your advice everyone - now all I have to do is find a place to moor it. That may prove a little more tricky!
