Hi all

I have just looked at an 1987 Oceanis 350 and I quite like it. Does anyone know of any known problems, things to look out for or just have any experience (good as much as bad) with them?

Any information would be greatly appreciated as this is our first "big boat" purchase and we are a tad apprehensive (but very excited).

Thanks

Thomas

I'm afraid these are not very good boats.I once delivered one from Macau to Hong kong (about 40nm) and on a reach in about 18 kns wind ,the boat wouldn't respond to the helm despite letting go the mainsheet. It had a shoal draft keel with small wings.Didn't impress me.Good acommodation though.
Sorry to be so negative.

I've just bought her baby sister - the 320. Haven't had a chance to sail her yet but from the research I did you have to accept that 75% of these went to the charter business in sunnier climes (Turkey, Greece, Carribean), which is what they were designed for. It's not a boat with great sailing (pointing) ability, it's for cruising. With it's shallow forefoot, shorter mast, shallow wing keel and broad stern it will need to be sailed as flat as possible and reefed early to get the best performance.

To quote from the Yachting Monthly review of 1988 'She has clearly been designed for waters other than ours, but this does not by any means make her unfit for Channel cruising. She is a homely boat with undemanding manners and will suit families who enjoy spending time on their boats but don't intend to make long passages under sail. The occasional night at sea (underway?) should be no problem, but she is not deisned for much more than that'.

For our type of sailing - cruising the Solent, West Country and Northern French coast we hope she will be right for us. And the accommodation is generous too.

So if you accept her for what she is she should be a reliable and undemanding boat.

I assume the 350 is similar!
