We have been looking at various makes in the 32' range and the two layouts that appeal are either the oceanis 311 or maybe a newer 323 and the Jeanneau 32i

I cant help worrying about the 311 being almost a ton lighter (3600kg) than many of the other 32' yachts including a 32s5 that we looked at but I dont see any reviews that specifically mention this point.

Can anyone please advise ?

How do they actually compare? Beam, length, depth? A wider boat with a deeper keel will need less ballast. Whilst a narrower boat will take less materials to build. Then there's the materials used for the interior.

Many possibilities basically.

The weights vary between who supplies the figures. I tried to get an accurate figure for my 323 for lifting reason, but it wasn't easy. The owners manual uses a couple, but doesn't say if its with or without rigging etc. However at my last lift, without mast, but with everything else on board I came out at 4.5T.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much. Buy the one you like the most/can get at the best price.

I got the data from several different sources including sailboat data and the manufacturers data and all compare closely for the yachts checked specifically the Jeanneau 32i and the Bene 32s5. The length and beam are all similar and surely the ballast is included in the total displacement ? I can understand a difference of 10-15% but 25%(ish) is a lot of difference

Completing my profile probably wont really help to answer the question but I will get round to it when I buy a yacht ;)
