Looking at the possiblity or getting a long term berth in the solent, one has popped up in Ocean Village, anyone know what this marina is like? secure, facilities, friendly etc etc
Ocean village not a lovely place, but shops etc nearby and quite a lot of action. best thing is it's proximity to solent instead of grinding out of portsmouth or chichester harbour.
Ocean village is quite conveniently sited near to the city centre of southampton, although you've got to go all thew way down southampton water to get anwhere interesting. Last time I was there the shops and resrtaurants near the marina were being redeveloped so it was a bit of a building site
'grinding out of portsmouth' - you presumably mean Port Solent rather than those convenient marinas just inside the entrance and 5 mins from the Solent.
Ocean Village is ok - tends to get a fair amount of charter companies and big race events. Be prepared for the Friday night dash to the Hamble to get you close to the real Solent.
AFAIK it's not very building site-ish anymore. Important to avoid berths close to quayside, by Harry Ramsdens, else you get cig buts and lager cans chucked on boat. Also the far side (B Pontoon? I mean the West side) is a long walk round, A pontoon better
I berthed there for 3 seasons a couple of years back. Major advantage is all tides access plus no tidal flow in marina. Disadvantages include car parks which get crowded, steep ramps at low tide, long walks to boat if in wrong place. I wouldnt take a berth within lager can throwing range of the walls since most of Southampton's yoof think this is great sport. Plenty of distractions such as cinemas, restaurants etc but they are knocking down the bit in the middle for yet more flats
If you get the right berth, I would reccomend it
NO NO unless it,s really cheap, as said in other posts watch where you go, we were there for 2 nights last summer, very crowded and pontoons short for length of my boat, at throwing out time some yob was shouting his head off for an hour, untill it went quiet, then more noise and some swimming going off, left themall to it.

I am pretty sure that the main pavillion at OV is about to be knocked down just leaving the one restaurant and cinemas, more housing association flats to be put up me thinks.
Large chunks of OV housing filled with Council tennants as developers could never sell it.
Have a look at Hamble river, expensive but central to solent, several places to eat, if u have kids buy em a rubber dinghy and outboard and they be gone for hours, I went form Hamble to Cowes in tinker tramp with 4 horse at age 13...got into a little trouble 4 that....
burgundyben, coolest of men, by all I'm called, cool burgundyben.
Just a note of caution but I wouldnt send my kid out in a dinghy on the Hamble. The tide runs very hard especially on the ebb, theres lots of traffic and wash and if they think one of the gravel banks at the entrance is a good place to land and lark about, they might not live to regret it. There've been a couple of nasty accidents only recently
Berth brokerage was offering a 8 yr lease on a 12m pontoon berth (b pontoon) which has just been reduced to 21k from 25k. I offered 17k which was accepted which after doing my calculations and NPV'ing the cash flows gives an anuual berthing cost of just under 3 grand a year inc rent of around £400 is still payable pa. Berth is 12mx3.5m (although berth itself is just over 12mx4.5m). MDL charge around 5k pa the same size berth.
Downsides seem to be the nosie of the marina / parking, also app the berth holder next to it is not the most friendly ever.
Ive almost decided not to go for it as a) may want to change to a larger boat in the next couple of years b) wife prefers Poole harbour c) electric not inc and would cost £52 per mth to rent from MDL.
Thanks for the reply posts, one of the best parts of boating is just chilling out in the marina so maystay at a friendly marina with a good clubhouse.
