Ocean tri at 47.2 knots - world's fastest....!!

Re: Ocean tri at 47.2 knots - world\'s fastest....!!

Worlds fastest (except for Moody 33/346/36) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thats really very impressive for a gaff rig with a reef in.

What stops it heeling?

Looks pretty cool, should cream up all the records for a while.

Re: Ocean tri at 47.2 knots - world\'s fastest....!!

I know I'm getting old now, as the main question in my mind is "why"? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
A decade or so ago I would have wanted one.... now I just think of all the stress involved in sailing such a monster at those speeds and spilling my ouzo! Also think "how would I be able to navigate working at those speeds and would my navigation for such fast changes of area be good enough?" Enough!! My brains about to blow and it's another hour and a bit before I can have my Saturday lunchtime ouzo! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Okay.... I admit it.... I've become an old git without realising it!

Re: Ocean tri at 47.2 knots - world\'s fastest....!!

Bloody hell, I assume that it's generating its own apparent wind. If that is the case then it could go somewhat faster yet. I also assume that bicycle clips are standard issue for the crew /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Ocean tri at 47.2 knots - world\'s fastest....!!

Must admit I had a momentary attempt to work out the physics of sailing off the wind at 47 knots in 25 knots of wind, satisfied myself that it couldn't exceed the speed of light, and decided to pour myself another drink instead. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Wow!

This also demonstrates that saildrives aren't quite as vulnerable as some people think. I know it is out of the water most of the time but it must still take quite a hammering. Presumably a folding propeller is essential!

Dihedral. The canted foils are lifting surfaces along their entire span. The more foil in the water the more lift and visa versa. At one point in the video, right at the beginning, the windward foil comes out of the water, no foil no lift so the boat settles back and the foil starts working again. On the downwind side of the boat the opposite is happening, the foil is forced deeper so develops more lift, counteracting the heeling force.

My thoughts were - "what happens when the bow digs in".

Presumably if you're within a mile or two of the marina the crew get early shore leave /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The crew in one of the clips was talking about adjusting the ballast for fore and aft trim.

Can you imagine an ocean crossing and trying to sleep...? At least you don't have waves banging against the hull.
