I have a DSC VHF and wireless hand set
Ocean Radio RO 4800 and P4800.
The wireless handset has become defective and I'm looking for info regarding repair. It powers up and handshakes with the base station but, as soon as a key is pressed the display disappears. Taking the battery out for longer than two hours and the display returns but disappears if a key is pressed. The display back light still works and turns on and off with the power button.

I understand Ocean Radio was taken over by Furuno in 1990 but the kept the Ocean Radio brand name. Looking at Furuno's web site, there's the same or very simular radio although no wireless hand set?

The local Furuno agent in Portsmouth said they don't support the Ocean Radio product!

And help or advice appreciated.

I think Ocean Radio are same as Navicom (not Navico) in different casings. I thought Mantsbrite distributed these but not sure if currently they do. Force 4 sold Radio Ocean VHFs at one time. You might be better contacting one of the French retaillers.

The battery plugs in and the external contacts are for charging. The battery status bar indicator shows a full condition.

When text disappears from the display, the hand set still appears to function with the base station. For example, channel change, receive and transmit.

I have also had this handset.

The battery pack in mine connected with a small 2 pin plug and socket inside the battery compartment. On mine this corroded.

The corrosion raises the contact resistance. In my case it was enough to allow the handset to function partially.

So it 's worth checking those contacts.

Ok thanks, I'll check this.

Battery terminals look good but cleaned them anyway, light abrasion and spray contact cleaner.

The wireless hand set pairs and functions perfectly with the base station, radio check with the coast card on channels 16 & 67. The screen back light is bright just no text.

Contacted Mantsbrite who sell the same handset but badged Navicom but they could only offer a new handset at £100 + p&p

Furuno UK don't support Radio Ocean, they advised I need to go to Furuno France.
Logged onto the Furuno France web site and tried to place an enquiry but, UK is not listed on their enquiry form! In addition, Radio Ocean, is not listed as one of their products. So, was unable to complete the enquiry form.

Just a thought........
The hand set was supplied with a mains charger that delivered 12vdc to the charge unit. For the last 6 years, I've used the boats 12v supply for the charge unit. This can fluctuate between 11.3 and 13.8 volts. With the charge unit connected to the boats 12v supply (was 12.6v today) I measured 6.1 volts on the charge unit pins.

With the battery removed from the handset, the battery voltage measured 4.2v On the outside of the battery its written 3.6v

Have I 'over cooked' the hand set!?

I think the battery pack is two NiMh.

4.2V would be rather high but it's quite possible the handset electronics will survive that.

I've PMed you regarding contact with Furuno France.
