We came across this boat anchored off Sibenik in Croatia recently. Apologies for b/w photos due to either operator uselessness (more likely) or camera malfunction (less likely). In actual fact, the boat is a sort of English Channel grey colour so the you don't lose much by seeing her in b/w:)

IMHO, this is one of the ugliest boats I've ever seen. Apparently it was designed by Sir Norman Foster; he should stick to office blocks. Not only is it ugly but also impractical. Close up, you could see that the curved profile of the boat severely limits living space on board and in addition, the massive structure in front of the pilot house must impede visibility.
What do others think?

alhough I'm an architect, I wont support Sir Fosters.

I can see where he's coming from, and I can understand the basic sketch lines that led to this mess.
Mind you the aft is a reasonable liveable space (from what one can see) but definitely the front is godawful.
I mean even the ending of the main structural arc (being thinner to unsuccessfully solve the visibility issues) are wrong and bow heavy, designwise it's wrong. However if the arcs had a decent way to end 1/4 lengthwise off the bow and leave a decent clear helm and reasonably designed bow section, it could've been much better.
Would be interested to see a front elevation. If I was in the office I'd photoshop the photo using the tablet and explain what I mean a bit better.

cheers

V.

the main structural arc
Are you sure it's actually structural?
Dunno for sure, but I would think that the hull is just a normal one, structurally self-sufficient, and the whole superstructure is just one of the many attempts to make something different for someone who didn't want to go unnoticed.
Achieving a remarkable result, in this respect... :D

remarkable result for sure :)

You're one of us, aren't you mr MM? :p
I'd asume it's structural as far as the superstructure is concerned. Looks very airy underneath and see through allover so that's what I thought. Maybe I'm wrong in which case it's even worse ;)

There are three of them I think ? All built by Rodriguez .

I quite like the 'front on ' view but have to agree about visibility .... I assume there are loads of external cameras to support the helm.

Nope, actually I'm not. I have some friends who are though, and architecture has always been a passion of mine.
I see what you mean re. the reasons behind your thought, and you might well be correct.
In the stern section particularly, the arch does seem structural.
I'd be curious to see how it was bonded to the hull, particularly at the bow.
I think it's unlikely that it was all built in one piece with the hull, that would be very tricky.
One thing is for sure, if it doesn't have any structural function, you're spot on in saying that it's even worse...! :)

Aha. For some reason, I assumed she was built in GRP, but actually an alu (or steel) construction makes more sense with a design like that.
Not that I can see a lot of sense in such design, anyway... :D

IIRC the plan was to build several of these and sell them as fractional ownership, but because they're so damned ugly, bordering on comical, they built fewer than expected. One of them is regularly around Antibes, and was moored opposite us a couple of days ago.
