I'm starting out in boating and would like to know what's available to me. If I have access to the ocean (in my case Boston) and a quality vessel, where can I go (besides the obvious ocean shoreline). For example, I could go down the St Lawrence to the Great Lakes. Are there other inland lakes I can access? Other valuable information would be clearance issues (above and below) in accessing these waterways.

I would think this info would be collected somewhere, yet after some Googling around, I didn't stumble on anything.

I think you would probably find it useful to take some training. It's not just a question of information, you need to know how to interpret and apply the information for it to be of any use. You will also find that most of the users of this forum are from northern Europe. I'm not personally familiar with the eastern seaboard of North America but maybe someone else is. I do know that you can sail from Boston to Chicago if you want.

Thanks for the links. Ans yes, thust me, I'm the type to be fully educated before I throw out the sails so to speak. And that's exactly what I am looking for - information to be educated so I can be realistic about my expectations of venue based on the types of boats that can access those venues. I'd rather not buy a large sail boat or motor yacht and find out my draft is 1 foot too deep for a passage or roof 1 foot too high to clear a bridge.

Thanks again for the info and you'll see me around while I get smart. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
