I find that sometimes putting something off until I can do a "proper job" means it never gets done through lack of time. I am now much more inclined to do an "it'll do" job and then if I get the time (or inclination) to improve on it, I do that subsequently.

But stepping back from actively boating I find myself wondering at the obsessive nature of some of the "suggestions" in posts which pose queries.

Often the original question becomes lost under a deluge of barely-related suggestions which mainly revolve around the "very best" way of proceeding and complicating the procedure or solution to an extent that only an experienced sailor (who probably wouldn't have posed the question in the first place) would appreciate.

Yup - I wonder if it's a by product of the current sue anyone/health and safety obssessed world we live in.... its almost like people think they will be held personally liable for suggesting something that isn't in the manual.. if I ask a question, usually I unsubscribe after the first 5 answers..

Probably not if like me, others like the sense of being full of their own self importance, then they might be behaving in the manner suggested in the OP.
