Those who know their onions are aware that the hazard to 'small vessels' lies not so much in the Strait itself, but running out miles to seaward, where the concentrated stream meets big swells running in from the Atlantic - giving huge and chaotic overfalls. The Admiralty Chart does not emphasize this real hazard enough.
