Someone mentioned that Kerrera marina do not offer fuel to customers of the transit marina so we went to Tobermory for a fill instead.

Didn't the previous owners have all sorts of legal, transportation and cost problems over the bulk storage of fuel? As far as I am aware, the new owners only have limited storage capacity so it's possible they may just be providing it as a service to their customers. I would be very surprised if they were being "snotty".

Anyway, I plan to call in there soon. I'll check it out.

...I believe that CalMac have been told that they were breaching good practice and setting a bad example by conveying routine info on CH16. I'm sure that, they'd be more than happy to return to common sense and spit out all they have to say on CH16 if they were not being watched pedantically.

Even on my piddling little boat I receive AIS. I don't switch to CH12 when I hear the announcement, but it does cause me to look at the screen to see what is going on. I have observed some variability in the length of the warning, and heard one recently that was far to short to be of use to slow moving craft (I had it sussed on AIS as we were semi-becalmed in the North Channel.)

I'm in favour of an over-arching harbour authority and being told to keep out of the way in the north channel. I am NOT in favour of the harbour authority being run by one of its customers - least of all the most powerful one. The conflict of interest will come back to bite us at some point.

On this, they could probably have carried on with the announcements on Ch16 but for the fact that they transmit on full power. We hear them off Easdale and at Tobermory sometimes. A low power transmission will alert everyone in the area without blasting it across half of Scotland!

Stayed in Kerrera a couple of weeks ago. Great place - Farm shop, fresh eggs etc. The Bar and food offer at the Marina is great and it was good to see people travelling over from Oban to dine there.
Calmac will be short of 1 skipper from the Clansman when I get my hands around the Sod's neck - I've reported his poor seamanship to the MCA so we'll see what comes of it.

That's good to hear, it was bit worrying after JDs observations that it may be tough trading conditions.

What was the Calmac incident, can you elaborate?

Coming into Oban from S.of Mull. Heard the All Ships broadcast and tucked in out of the channel on the Kerrera side in the corner beyond the Barbers Pole. Clansman came out of the Bay at full tilt, huge bow wave and so much power she was listing to Starboard right under Dunollie Castle. We had nowhere to go and so took the full brunt of her wash which knocked my grandson off his hold on a wheelhouse grab rail causing him to crack his head. I've recorded the date time place, weather conditions, my position etc to the MCA. In years of working on the River Wyre when the P&O RoRo ferries used to come into Fleetwood 2 or 3 times a day, we never had any such incidents. I think the P&O Ships were staffed by Professional Masters not the cowboys taken on by CalMac.

That does sound reckless. Hope your grandson is okay and hope the MCA do something about it.
