I've just got hold of a secondhand gearbox and lower leg portion to replace the knackered one on my also secondhand and rather shabby Merc 2.5hp.

I've drained the gear box oil and it was black and horrible but not gritty in any way.

It would seem a good idea to flush the gear box with something first..... but what with?

Or should I really strip the whole thing down and do it that way?

Any thoughts guys.

Make sure you let all the paraffin drain out before refill as you do not want it diluting the oil.

Also please note one r and two fs. From the Latin parum affinis. You should all have learned that at school!

never considered flushing it,should I ?

[/ QUOTE ] Only if what drains out looks really 'orrible. Personally i would flush with some light oil, cheap engine oil perhaps rather than paraffin
