My partner and I are about to sign on the dotted line for a 1988 AO 390 with twin Vovlo's 71A.:)
We have authorised a pre purchase survey and oils analysis of engines and gear boxes.:D
Are there any other major "gottcha's" I should be aware of with this class and type of boat ?? :ambivalence:

A warm welcome to the forum, and a great first post!

This is a new one for me, so have had to revert to Mr Google for some info, and I assume you mean an Ocean Alexander? Can't find anything on Wiki, but there is a Yachtworld ad. If correct, then this is an aft cabin, so really nice layout with separate cabins front and rear. With some aft cabin boats, the shafts can be a hassle to get at, meaning that maintenance is sometimes not fully supported, so worth pointing your surveyor in that direction. It is a 28 year old boat, so electrics, water, heads etc need close scrutiny. Vacu flush heads can be expensive to repair, but work great on my boat. Don't worry about things like soft trim, this are expendable, and may not be to your taste in any case. A good hull surveyor will check things like water content, cracks etc. You will need a proper marine technician to check the engines/transmissions etc, and generator.

Sounds exciting, so good luck!

Thank you.. Will advise the surveyor to look in the dark places.
Your absolutely correct, the radar and nav package are old units requiring upgrades.
Oh. Yes it's an Ocean Alexander.
Ciao

The earlier Taiwanese hulls have a reputation for occasionally suffering from osmosis but your surveyor should pick this up immediately if there's a problem. Otherwise I always liked the Ocean Alexanders because they felt a notch above the other Taiwanese built boats in quality and of course, the company is still going strong today

Don't expect a sprightly on water performance. This is a heavy boat with a semi planing hull and I wouldn't expect much more than 22kts

Let us know how the survey goes and some pics would be good
