the marina charges only vary a bit. There is often a change in price per metre, at about 8m, and again at 10/11m. Getting just under one of those will save a few bob, perhaps. The closer you are to open sea, also tends to cost more. So, the further up river/up some backwater you are, the cheaper it might become. Then of course, if you want all mod cons and facilities, you have to pay for them. If you can manage with a rickety pontoon, no showers etc and tidal accees, the price will drop quite a bit. May not be what the wife has in mind though.
So, assuming you do need a marina, all tidal access, Solent, then the price will be, very roughly, £4/500 a metre-overall length depending. Thats assuming you can even find a berth. Dont get a boat until you are sure of that point.
So, its, more remote, or smaller boat, or cough up!

Why?? Can you find a mooring with all the facilities of port solent for a grand? Thats the question he asked. Not a mooring in a drying backwater somewhere, which I'm sure is possible.
Enlighten me please.

Depnds what boat you have and what your expectations are.

On the Hamble alone you should try all the yacht clubs, the pink ferry, the HM, some of the boat yards further up if a mobo, Tucker and Munday, Mayflower Marine and I think Blue Star boats have some. HM can sub let or put you on visitors.

There are some swinging moorings in Portsmouth Harbour which are not so dear.

Think also there is dry sailing options in a number of places for smaller boats and mud berths on the Itchen.

Hope this helps.

I beg your pardon, ignore the notion that you can expect to phone around and find the same thing for 1/5th the going rate.

Can I get a brand new Merc for 5k?

Thanks that was what I was saying. But I wonder if I could get a no frills berth in the area, for my boat, 57' I do not want to take the ground and only draw 5' anyway. Know anywhere?
I'm serious, might have to return to UK for a year. Although I may head north again.

It was a philosophical question anyway........... Is that how you spell it???

Im told the boat tends to get a bit swell battered around Portsmouth harbour entrance, rubbinbg up and down on the pontoons, and sleeping can be an up / down affair when the ferries are on the move!

I am a realist but it just seems in the wrong business.........A marina is what I need to own, seemingly a license to print 'Folding'

Pompey harbour of course suffers form being a little choppy, but a swinging mooring wont (thats a mooring on a bouy as opposed to one that is promiscuous).

I've oft wondered how lucrative the marina business is, I think some of the costs are high, such as dredging and purchase.

What size boat? I don't pay that and I'm on the Hamble, as others have said there are a few places that are a bit cheaper, have you tried Clarance marina in Gosport?

As to the swell near the harbour entrance even in a small boat it was fine! Personally I wouldn't go near Port Solent, don't like the idea of being in a goldfish bowl, or the idea of the lock, or the long drag out of the harbour!! But thats just me and I know many people are quite happy with it!

If you can live with restricted access I think Southsea was a bit cheaper..

There are a lot of privately owned berths in Port Solent, if you go down there you will see a few ads in windows. They are much cheaper than the 'marina' owned berths

I've just checked the rate at Wells next to sea. Not quite south coast.
Visitor £17.00 per night for a 10M pontoon berth or if i stay for a while i could pay the yearly charge of £250.00.

My boat had always been on the Solent, but when we both retired we needed to look at monthly outgoings carefully.

Staying on the Solent would have cost us around £4k per year - even though we normally came out from Dec - Mar.

Moving to Lagos was a no-brainer really. 9 months in the water here costs just over £1k a year for my boat - and electricity is included in that price.

Plus the cost of living is about 60% of what it is back in the South East so we save a fair bit while we are here. I reckon 150 Euros lasts as long as £200 in the UK.

Port Solent have a home owners management association that have blocked the use of a Berth belonging to the homeowner if he does not keep his own boat on it, or is not in residence (rented).

Some of the Advertisers for berths conveniently ignore this, which is good for you initialy, right up until you get a letter demanding the removal of your boat...with no where to go!

This is not the case for all berths and certainly not in Oyster Quay, but check first to avoid future problems.

Personally, I think the most picturesque place close to the Solent is Chichester harbour with moorings in Chichester marina very reasonably priced.

45 mins to get out of the harbour and just a few minutes (in a motorboat) to the Solent.

The beauty of the harbour is it's sheltered so even on a bad day in the Solent the harbour can be quite pleasant.

To moor a boat up to 10mtrs is 'only' £3300

What a fantastic place, none of this concrete jungle like Port Solent and others, just surrounded by countryside.

The marina does have a lock which can be a pain but doesn't take long to work out how to beat the queues.

Wonder if they have room for a larger (57') boat, may need a berth and that would suit me! Bound to be a pub or two around!
