We will be going to New Zealand in mid-February, with a stopover in Hong Kong on the return trip. I anticipate being able to get cheap electronic stuff in HK, but don't know anything about availability/cost of marine equipment in either country. Should I budget to being able to buy some cheap kit?

Forget Hong Hong

Electronics are dearer in HK than in Britain, despite HK's lack of VAT, unless you want pirated software from Golden Arcade, and yottiquipment is very expensive in HK. Dunno about NZ.

Re: Forget Hong Hong

I think goods purchased here in NZ for use overseas can be waived GST (VAT).
These days most people fitting out a boat purchase their electronics here as there is not much ,if any, advantage in purchasing offshore., with the attendant disadvantages outlined by the previous poster.

These are a few NZ electronics suppliers you could check out if you wish.
Good luck.

Re: Forget Hong Hong

I live in HK. 90% of sailors use chandlers for emergency only and mail order (Westmarine popular) for everthing else and at half the price! Chandlers, like
many, stuck with ridiculous rentals and lack of volume turnover so mark up tends
to be inflated.
