Is it Sicily, adjacent to the Messini straits - I sailed through there recently and both sides were on fire, mainland Italy as well. Even Etna was obscured by the smoke. Local coastguard broadcast a warning to avoid the area the planes were scooping up water from, lest an unsuspecting diver be dumped into the flames.....
