Thanks everyone who contributed to the Nuts! 1 thread about threads.

Now for the material: what would be the best to use on DZR brass gate valves? The current ones are zinc plated and are rusting very rapidly. Give an option would you use

The nut material should be as close to the fitting material as possible. Brass is never a good option for marine use. Stainless is best kept for compatible stainless fittings.
Silicon bronze is probably the best option.
For a comprehensive range of fixings try www.gtc-direct.com
They stock fastners in a wide range of metals at resonable prices and don't mind dealing with small orders.

The whole dissimilar metals thing becomes irrelevant as the handle is only available in plastic coated mild steel! You may as well take it that when the handle rots away, it's time to fit a new valve.

aha! but I am re-covering the handles (they are not too far gone yet) with just about everything I can throw at them and then plan to isolate the handles from the rest using nylon washers and Duralac... What do you think: willit make a difference? It seems to me a waste to have to change some perfectly good valves for the sake of handles that are worth a few pennies /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If the handles are the pressed steel strip sort it wouldn't be too hard to fettle up some new ones out of bronze flat or maybe 316 stainless flat. Might as well have it make a proper job of it.
