Dear Mr Bedouin, it certainly was a feature of 'Rumpole of the Bailey'. He was a famous barrister, and she was the little woman at home- or so she was portrayed. He no more obeyed her than he turned business away. I stand by my term disaraging. By the way, does your wife/ other half/ partner wear a burka?

Whatever she was she was not "the little woman at home", she was a dragon of the first order. He disobeyed her at his peril; though he did go to considerable lengths to keep things from her!
