Number of pleasure boats in the South Coast UK

Hi!
I'm preparing a presentation about our experiences of buying a boat from UK and delivering it back home.

For the background, does anybody know roughly how many pleasure boats there are in the South Coast UK in general and in the Solent area especially.

Google told me that there are 450000 alltogetherin the UK, but I didn't find anything more specific.

Also, I know this is the best boat-forum around /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, but is this the biggest in the UK?

Hi

I thnik you have a problem asking for a metric like that. There is no consistent or formal registration required at a central administrative point, so it's not possible to print out a report giving totals for "pleasure craft" in a particular area.

Definitions also is a loose area ranging from small rowing tenders to Mirabelle V sizes.

Insurance companies will have estimates of craft as part of their marketing strategy, but that's commercially confidential and unlikely to be available. Likewise marinas.

Try a Google earth map and count the vessels in a particular area and extrapolate that ?

I would suggest counting the total number of marina berths.

Double it to account for moorings etc

And you will be somewhere close

The 450 000 boats mentioned is based on data gathered from different sources.

This might be more complicated than I first thought. I suppose one could speculate that eg. 60% of UK boating takes place in the south coast but this isn't really based on anything /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I don't really want to go into counting boats from google map, so I'll need to think something else.
