nice new mainsail - Oops , the boom is non standard and instead of a 9ft 6ins foot it has a 7ft 6ins foot. How easy is it to get a new boom for a 20 year old boat, or is there another way - apart from getting the scissors out?

Have a quick search for spars on the net - there are a number of places which sell booms made to size (YBW gives some lins as a starting point). Z-Spars seem reasonably priced (as just an example), you'll need to make sure that you can match your existing goose-neck to your new boom though. All of the people I've called (looking to get a new boom myself) have been happy to talk over the phone and give prices. Other things to consider are reefing lines, hooks and jammers/cleats etc ..

G'day Andy,

Have you considered purchasing a blank section and re fitting it with your existing boom parts, I assume that the non standard boom you have is just an original but cut down, so the fittings may well be re used.

Just a thought, that might save you a couple of bob.
