Now we\'re cruising.

Further to recent posts, SWMBO has agreed we can go for the whole weekend, provided we stay in the harbour and berth in a marina on Saturday night.

I am a big fan of Sparkes where I spent the week after ariving in the harbour but as it's only ten minutes from the mooring, it would hardly count as a cruise.

I've been to Chi by car before, but never by boat. What are scuttlebutters hints, tips, warnings and otherwise ramblings on Chichester Harbour's marinas?

Re: Now we\'re cruising.

Chichester Marina could be a bit big and impersonal, although it's got plenty of facilities and it's a pleasant walk over fields to Dell Quay.

Birdham Pool is next door and is extremely picturesque, although only accessible HW +/- 3hrs.

Chi marina is very busy, lots going on with a restaurant on site. You will have to lock in and lock out unless you arrive at free flow.

How about going up to Emsworth marina? Very different indeed to Chi marina. There is a sill to negotiate but easy a couple of hours either side of HW. Emsworth marina is very quiet, peaceful. From here though you can walk into Emsworth there are loads of places to eat. Try the Sussex Brewer for a drink and a meal.

Re: Now we\'re cruising.

Sparkes is good; Chichester Yacht Harbour is a bit too much like a caravan park for me and inaccessible at low water; Northney is remote and you really need a car to get to anywhere good to eat; Birdham is a lovely spot but very tidal. Emsworth is also quite tidal but attractive with nice walks and easy access to the 'fleshpots' of Emsworth itself.

Next time you are up at Northney, forget the Ship, try the Royal Oak, tucked away from the main road, overlooking the harbour. Very good food, good beer and its not as expensive as the Ship. It also has more natural atmosphere, nothing to do with it being all non-smoking, it just does not have the 'Harvester' type feel that the Ship has.
