I have seen a boat I like.....problem....its on Lake Superior USA......how or what is the best way to bring home to the UK ?????? sail/motor thru the lakes St Lawrence seaway etc or low loader from say Cleveland to Baltimore say...how much cost to low load a 12 ton boat 300 miles??????all suggestings will be greatfull.......intrepid sailor

Assuming you are comming back to Europe it sounds like the ideal 'shakedown cruise' by the time you get to the sea you will have found any problems!

My partner used to live just outside Cleveland & Montreal but at that time was not a sailor (I corrupted her!!) but may be able to help with general info if there is anything specific you need to know pm me

If you add the cost of getting the boat home to the purchase price (+VAT??) would it not be more expensive than buying the boat in Europe? Have you been over there and seen the boat? Are you going to tell us what it is?
However if you have the time it sure would be a good trip home!

many thanks...doing research...distance to the Atlantic via St Lawrence seaway is 2343 miles ...so at 100 miles per day looking at 23 ...24 days...........mmmmmmmm

If you Google "Boat Transport" you'll turn up websites of companies that will give you quotations on moving a yacht by road in the US or Canada. The all-water route from Lake Superior to the sea contains sections with locks & rivers where you cannot make 100 miles/day. A popular alternative to the St Lawrence route is the Erie Canal & Hudson River from Oswego on Lake Ontario to New York City. It's a mast-down route which typically takes two weeks, although in some years high water causes temporary closure of the canals. You won't be able to sail on Lake Superior until the ice melts, and you'll want to be well into your Atlantic crossing before the hurricane season begins. Perhaps your idea of a shortcut by land from Cleveland to Baltimore would work.
