Now here is a conundrum. What would you do?

We have been to Excel and had a wander around. Plenty of nice things to see and very few people. An over supply of boat shows perhaps?

Anyway, a recent thread indicated that almost anybody would be let onto the Oyster stand. So I went with HWMBO. But we had visited the Bavvy stand just before. So Bavaria were selling a 50 foot boat for well under £200,000, I didn't get the exact details, but it wasn't relatively expensive. Then we went onto the Oyster stand and had a look at the 55 foot boat at a smidge under £1000000. Over 1 million with necessary bits and pieces.

Now, if I had 1 million+ to spend on a hobby, and was in the market for a 50-ish foot boat, I would probably buy the Bav and a nice house somewhere abroad, rather than blow the lot on the Oyster.

The Oyster was very nice, but not to my mind worth that amount of money. Especially as we looked at a 55 of a few years vintage in Swannick Marina a couple of years ago, and ignoring the obvious neglect, it was a nicer boat internally than the one I saw today.

If I was really rich, I would probably go for a Discovery 55, or a nice big comfy cat, like a Broadblue.

But what would the Forumites choose? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If I had a spare million lying around I would have a few different boats .A 40plus footer for distance cruising.A large trailersailer and 4x4 to tow to different locations.maybe a traditional daysailer for the odd afternoon of pottering about.

All this is entirely dependant on a lottery win /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Easy..I'd buy a Mirror dinghy for £250 and an Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione, and then go for a VERY nice lunch with the change. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tim (well you weren't expecting any sense I hope)

Hate to think how much you would loose on an Oyster in three years .. Probably pay for a New Bavaria on Beneteau .. Like the idea of keeping cash in property .. Helps when you cannot get the zimmer frame on and off the boat .. Creeps up on us all sooner or later .. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It's interesting how - at this stage - several peeps are mentioning cats for their Lootery/Scratchcard/Pools win. I'm not religiously prejudiced ( well, only a little ) and although I have 'a thing' for catamarans, I haven't yet seen anything like the build and interior-fit quality of the better monomaran builders, such as Swan, etc.

I have looked at a SIBS Dean - in fact my SWMBO came looking for me and declared she'd fallen in love and wanted to introduce us....

This encounter turned out to be an interesting Dean catamaran just in from Cape Town, complete with leopard-skin upholstery. I think it was that which sort-of put me off. While they even offered to pay our inspection flights, I really couldn't see me reclining - with all my new 'bling' - on leopard skin.....! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I mean, there is a giddy limit!

If I had a million quid to spend, it would have to be a (wooden) East Anglian, (as I'd finally have the time to look after her) and a new Dragonfly. Not that I could bring myself to sell Evadne, even then.

With a million to play with it would have to be a new wooden Bristol Pilot Cutter around 55 foot for the serious sailing. I'd have more than enough change to buy the Targa for fishing, the 30 footish RIB for the speed fix and a new folkboat for footling around The Solent but probably not enough change to put them all in a local marina....

Hmmm a million quid should just about cover the cost of painting and varnishing the rusty ol ketch for the next few years.

Besides if i sold the old girl it would destitute somebody else !

Oh! Becky you do like to stir it up!

I can understand the dilemma in your post. If you only (only!!) have £1mil, then to spend it on one item, boat house etc, is silly. Remember maintenance is not free. 50 Bav? well OK maybe not a Bav, but something around £200k but used, let someone else enjoy the depreciation.

Oh! I can agree strongly with you on the Discovery 55, never seen inside one, but they do look lovely.

The rest of the money would be put to work, to provide an income.
