In keeping with Sarabande's threads on unusual anchors this is a thread on the development of an anchor, blow by blow.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f118/anchor-diy-200740.html

I'm not in favour of 'copying' but most anchors take facets from previous designs - and it all seems quite acceptable (to borrow, or copy).

One of the more interesting aspects are the last 2 posts, 58 and 59, in which the inventor, developer, compares his design against that of a Mantus and a Rocna. The reason I find them interesting is that he finds it impossible (in his chosen seabed) to get his (or the) Rocna to set (same with the Mantus).

Hands up anyone who has found their Rocna difficult to set. My limited experience is - it sets well and consistently

The choice of seabed to favour ones own anchor, in any anchor test, is not unusual - Mantus did exactly the same (though I think they removed those videos).

Also interesting - slightly earlier posts in the same thread the developer shows what seems to be a completed anchor - in the videos he is still honing the design as he appears to have chopped the end off the shank and re-welded at a slight angle -

Don't copy it yet!

I was surprised at the complete absence of comments recently, especially as it shows both Rocna and Mantus unfavourably - in contradiction to most CF posts on either of these anchors.

If you read through the whole thread there is a tendency to be critical of Bonaparte - but this has eased of to a sort of (sullen (?) )silence.

There are some, very limited, comments here

Whereas I don't like people copying I do like people who are willing to stick their neck out, and spend their own money, in looking at alternative ways of designing an anchor.
