1. Harwich Harbour & Approaches - Seasonal Recreational Mark – Harwich Shelf - On or after the 24th November 2022 the following seasonal recreational mark will be withdrawn: Harwich Shelf, East Cardinal Buoy, 51°56’.84N 001°18’07E
Positions given are WGS 84
2. Harwich Haven Channel Deepening Project: Dredging with backhoe dredger Goliath and Barges: From around 23 November 2022 and for a period of about five weeks, the backhoe dredger Goliath will be dredging in the main channel, working with the self-powered split-hopper barge Pieter Caland and supported by the tug Buzzard. The dredger will be operating at various locations in Dredge Areas A, B, C and D (See attached sketch on the usual web page) The backhoe dredger Goliath is fitted with three spud legs for holding position and will excavate material to load into the split-hopper barge Pieter Caland moored alongside. When full, the barge will sail to the Inner Gabbard East disposal site for disposal of dredge material.
Where required, the backhoe dredger will move out of the channel to facilitate safe passing of vessels. Moves (out of the channel or repositioning between cuts) will be assisted by the tug Buzzard. The following traffic organisation measures will apply when working in the main channel in areas B, C and D:
• The Goliath must be clear of the Deep-Water Channel before any vessel greater than 310m LOA is committed. This applies to vessel arrivals and departures.
• One way passing will be in effect where the available navigable width in the Deep-Water Channel has been reduced due to the Goliath.
The dredging contractor is the Boskalis Westminster / Van Oord Joint Venture appointed by Harwich Haven Authority to carry out the Harwich Haven Channel Deepening Project. With the increased frequency of vessel movements and dredging operations, mariners are reminded of the regulated vessel reporting requirements, the requirements to maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 71 and also to maintain a proper lookout at all times. For detailed vessel movements or information regarding the location of the dredging plant, please contact Harwich VTS on VHF 71 and listen to the daily Channel Deepening VHF broadcasts. All vessels may be subject to Harwich VTS Traffic Organisation.
3. RIVER MEDWAY – Gillingham Marina to Hoo Marina. Hydrographic Survey of Gas Pipeline - ‘Northern Divers’ will be conducting a hydrographic and “walk-over” survey of the River Medway between Gillingham Marina and Hoo Marina. Survey work will commence 28/11/2022 and is expected to be completed by 02/12/2022. Multiple survey runs will be performed at slow speed over the low water periods using a RIB Callsign “Northern Divers Sea Rover” who will be monitoring VHF Channel 74 at all times. All work will be completed from the surface and across the mudflats at low water, NO diving will be undertaken. Please be advised that during survey operations the vessel will be restricted in it’s ability to manoeuvre and other vessels are requested to be mindful of the nature of the works, reduce their wash when passing and maintain an appropriate safe distance.
