UKHO Permanent/Temporary/Preliminary Notices
1. ENGLAND - East Coast - Buoyage. - This Temporary UKHO notice repeats the Harwich Haven Authority Notice 78 of 2025 (reported earlier); a (necessarily) complicated arrangement of 4 site marker buoys marked by yellow special buoys with Y Fl 3s and 2 mooring buoys with Y Fl 3s. 2. ENGLAND - East Coast - Depths. - A Preliminary UKHO Notice announcing six reductions of depth in the Lowestoft Approaches, two by the W. Holm SHB, two on the east side of south Holm Sand and two in the Stanford Channel adjacent to the Stanford PHB. The two reductions on the east side of the south Holm sand is quite dramatic and significant.
3. ENGLAND - East Coast - Depths. - Two reductions of depth in the Yantlet channel in Sea Reach close-by the Tanker PHB. Unlikely to hinder leisure craft.
4. FRANCE - North Coast - Depths. Drying height. - Four significant reductions of depth and one new drying height off the beaches east of Calais. Worth noting if going that way.
Local
1. River Thames - Woolwich Reach - Woolwich Ferry Fender Works - Commencing on or about Friday 7th November, contractors on behalf of Transport for London will commence fender removal and installation at the North and South Woolwich Ferry terminals. Works will be conducted between the hours of 0700 and 1900, and last for approximately 3 days. The general location of the works is indicated by the red box on the chartlet. To facilitate these works the CPBS CHILI DOG will attend the fender locations. During these works there will be times when the fenders are not present and/or operational, and therefore no vessel is to use the terminals until works are complete. Mariners are advised to keep well clear of the Woolwich Ferry terminals while works are underway. At times, requests for vessels to proceed with caution or pass at slow speed may be made by London VTS on VHF ch.14, in accordance with the Port of London Authority’s Port Information Guide, under ‘London VTS’, section 4. International Code Flags ‘Romeo Yankee (RY)’ will be displayed accordingly. All vessels involved in the works will be maintaining a listening watch on VHF channel 14. 2. Surveyed Depths – Harwich Harbour - Update 20 - the latest hydrographic surveys showing depths in Harwich Harbour which are published as follows: Charts & Surveys - Harwich Haven Authority The controlling depth for deep draught vessels navigating within the harbour area should currently be taken as 15.4m below chart datum, plus height of tide. Significant depths below chart datum (not including inside berth boxes) are:
• 15.4m - spot soundings between the North West Beach Buoy and Grisle Buoy
• 15.3m - spot soundings between the Grisle Buoy and Shotley Spit Buoy
• 15.1m - spot soundings between the Shotley Spit Buoy and Babergh Buoy
Contact Harwich VTS or Haven Pilots for further information regarding tidal windows. This notice replaces local Notice to Mariners No. 82 of 2025, which is now withdrawn.
3. Medway Approach Channel Dredging Operations - are due to take place in the Medway approach channel, dredging is due to commence on or around 16th of October 2025 with completion expected by 26th October 2025. Initial dredging will be carried out over 5 days by the hopper-suction dredger
“Gateway” which will be piloted at all times. A further bed levelling exercise will follow and will be completed by plough dredging method from the multi-cat “Paul D”. “Gateway” and “Paul D” will maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 74 at all times and display the required signals for respective operations by day and night. Dredging will be focussed in the area of the Medway approach channel shown on the chartlet (as bove). All vessels transiting the Medway approach channel during the dredging period are requested to navigate with caution reducing speed and wash accordingly.
4. River Medway – Chatham Reach Euro Wharf – Diving Operations & Associated Works - diving operations will be taking place at Euro Wharf in Chatham Reach. Diving to safely remove legacy sheet piling and install cathodic protection along the face of the upper section of the quay is due to ommence 20th October 2025 with completion expected by 30th November 2025. Diver access and egress will be via man-basket suspended from a shore crane with a second crane being utilised to remove the sections of sheet piling as they are cut off, a safety boat will be on standby during dive periods. All vessels passing Euro Wharf are requested to navigate with extreme caution, maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 74 and reduce speed/wash accordingly.
5. River Medway – Saltpan Reach - Grain LNG Jetty 10 – Anode Installation, Shot Blasting / Spraying - Installation of sacrificial anodes by divers and shot blasting/spraying is due to take place at Isle of Grain LNG Jetty 10. Work commenced in April 2025, is still underway, and is now expected to continue until the spring of 2026, the operation carries significant risk to men working on the waterline and below the surface. Craft involved will be the:
- ‘Avocet’
- ‘Splitmoor
- ‘Storemoor’
- ‘Liftmoor’
- ‘Patrol’
- ‘Westbourne’
- Small rib tender ‘Retriever’
- All craft will maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 74 and display day signals for respective operations. All vessels passing Grain LNG Jetty 10 should navigate with caution, observe the LNG Jetty exclusion zone at all times and reduce speed and minimise wash accordingly.
6. Rivers Stour and Orwell - Environment Agency Trawl Survey - the Environment agency will be undertaking a scientific trawling survey in the River Orwell on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th November 2025. This will be conducted on board the vessel – Humber Guardian. Mariners are requested to pass with caution. Mariners requiring further information should contact ONS on VHF CH68.
7. Sizewell C Harbour vicinity - Obstruction to Navigation - following an incident during survey operations an obstruction is present in position 52° 13’ 25”N 001° 40’ 58”. This obstruction, consisting of a cylindrical steel tube may extend up to 4m above the seabed. It has now been marked with an orange dan buoy, positioned at: 52° 13’ 25.29576”N, 001° 40’ 58.58747”E. The buoy is lit with a white flashing light (Fl 1.5s). Please note that the depth of water above the obstruction has not yet been confirmed. As a precaution, mariners are strongly advised to maintain a minimum clearance of 200 metres from the buoy until further notice. I have marked up a chartlet showing the position which can be seen in the above quoted webpage in the Local List (scroll down).
8. Dover Harbour - Navigation Risk Assessment - Consultation - the Port of Dover Marine Navigation Risk Assessment, made in accordance with Port of Dover Marine Safety Code, is to be reviewed subject to consultation. As part of our policy of continual assessment and improvement, a review of the Navigation Risk Assessment has been carried out in line with the ‘Guide to good practice on port and marine facilities’, in conjunction with the ‘Port & Marine Facilities Safety Code’ (April 2025). The reviewed Navigation Risk Assessment has been reformatted into a Power BI report structure, for ease of use, and the assessments hyperlink has been appended to the distribution of this Local Notice to Mariners and can also be found on the Port of Dover website (NRA Link). Consultation is open to all interested parties until the 16th of November 2025. 9. Dover Harbour - Admiralty Pier Extension - 2 Fixed Red (vertical) Lights – Upper Light Extinguished - the top light of the two fixed red lights, on the Admiralty Pier Extension (CT2) is currently extinguished.
10. Port of Wells - they have reported revised buoyage. The Notice lists the 32 lighted and unlighted buoys by lat and long. I cannot lind any chartlet at the moment but there is a video: Navigation Video - Port of Wells I will see if I can mark up the buoyageon a chartlet.
11. Potton Bridge: No night service 22-28 October 2025 - due to a staff shortage, there will be no service at Potton Bridge for night time high tides between Wednesday 22 and Tuesday 28 October. Normal service on all high tides will resume on Wednesday 29 October.

I mentiooned that we 'did' the Spitway last week and now there is now a new chartlet available on: Downloads (Second Item). It is downloadable as jpg or pdf. Not a lot of change. Still depths down to 1.1m CD in line with the two SWBs. The best water is still was as it was and has recommended wpts which would give you 1.7m CD - which is 2 feet more. Last year I did send in the data to Trinity House but there was no reply. Hey ho.
